Congratulations to Shaun Goodwin of Anchorage for taking the title in the first Alaska Competitive Bowling Club (ACBC) event of the 2010-11 season Monday evening at Jewel Lake Bowl. During the 6-game Swiss Singles format qualifying in which each round is a position round, Shaun won four of six matches earning 120 of the possible 180 bonus pins awarded for match play victories. Using a Columbia Wrath Dead Flush, Shaun rolled games of 188, 236, 189, 184, 156, and 187 for a total of 1260 (including 120 bonus pins), averaging 190.0 for the six game block. Goodwin's total qualified for the third position overall and top position in the semifinal match, behind tournament leader Steve Brown and second place qualifier Dustin Sherman.
In the semifinals, the top two qualifiers (Brown and Sherman) earned byes directly to the championship match while qualifiers three through five (Goodwin, Tiffany Lebahn, and Randy Austin) bowled a one-game semi-final match. From the semi-finals, Goodwin advanced to the championship round with a score of 192, besting the games of Lebahn (186) and Austin (181). In the championship round, Goodwin fired a 214 to capture the title. Dustin Sherman finished in second place with 202, and Steve Brown rounded out the top three with a 191 game. When asked for his approach on playing the pattern on his way to the title, Goodwin replied, "I started playing inside fairly direct. My goal was to control the reaction down the lane to hopefully minimize splits and leave makeable spares. As they broke down I let each pair dictate where I would play; but overall I started to move right and increase my speed as the day progressed."
In winning the tournament, Shaun bested 23 other ACBC competitors. The top five finishers of the August 23rd ACBC event were:
|
Bowler |
Scratch Total | Bonus | Total Pins |
| 1. Shaun Goodwin (8 games) | 1,546 | 120 | 1,666 |
| 2. Dustin Sherman (7 games) | 1,373 | 120 | 1,493 |
| 3. Steve Brown (7 games) | 1,432 | 150 | 1,582 |
| 4. Tiffany Lebahn (7 games) | 1,271 | 150 | 1,421 |
| 5. Randy Austin (7 games) | 1,323 | 90 | 1,413 |
Three-game High Series and High Game side pot winners included Randy Austin with a 641 series (high series of the tournament), Steve Brown (623), Stephan Kiorpes (238 - high game of the tournament), and Shaun Goodwin (236). Tiffany Lebahn was the highest female finisher, besting two other women in her third place overall finish.
Goodwin also expressed excitement about the advent of the Alaska Competitive Bowling Club. "I think it's great. It promotes healthy competition between the bowlers in Anchorage and provides some additional (and much needed) tournament style play. Anytime you can compete on a tougher condition you have the opportunity to improve yourself as a bowler. I hope it continues to expand and grow within the Anchorage community."
As with all ACBC events, Monday's tournament was played on a "sport" bowling pattern in which the margin for error is much less than normal high-scoring "house" conditions. Competing on Kegel's "Winding Road", only one player was able to average 200 or more. Tournament qualifying leader Steve Brown averaged 206.83 while winning five of his six matches.

This oil pattern uses a distance of 39 feet with very little downlane help to guide the ball into the pocket. Because of the lower ratios towards the end of pattern, the greatest factor on how the WINDING ROAD will play is the lane surface and how the bowlers breakdown the pattern. For this tournament, a few units were added to the outer boards to increase pattern life. The WINDING ROAD could play more inside or it could play more outside but the player who figures it out will straighten out the WINDING ROAD!
